My longest run ever & dad’s half marathon

What I love about training for my first marathon: every weekend I get to run my longest run ever! This week’s long run was 9 miles, and Dixie and I killed it! But first, lets go back to yesterday.

After work Friday Thomas and I went to the gym and I did 4 treadmill miles @ 8:27 pace while watching Nashville on Hulu. What did treadmill runners do before Netflix & Hulu?

Then we went out for a very unhealthy dinner, delicious beer and some March Madness. What I love about North Carolina:

  1. Carolina Burgers: Chili, slaw, cheese, and onion rings on a burger. I had a hard time deciding between this and the “dirty south burger,” which was topped with pimento cheese and fried pickles.. two of my most favorite things on this earth.
  2. Foothills Brewing Carolina Blonde cream ale.  So delicious.

I also love this other Carolina blonde, Sarah, who happens to be my best friend & maid of honor. We are pretty much inseparable and finish each other’s sentences and all that. She’s the best & joined us for dinner!

This morning my dad ran the Emerald Isle half marathon in 1:36 and won his age group! He’s 55 and has done 6 marathons and “40 something” half marathons… he has officially lost count. He really is amazing!! Mom sent me this picture right before I went out for my run.

Dixie and I went to to Salem Lake to do our long run today. Of course we had to have a pre run snuggle selfie.

This is a 7 mile trail around a beautiful lake in Winston-Salem, NC. I only stopped to take one quick picture during our run, but it doesn’t do it justice. It really is beautiful & so peaceful.

We went out 4.5 miles and turned around. I didn’t want to go all the way around because I was afraid I might be tempted to stop at mile 7. I was surprised at how easy this run felt. I can’t wait to do 10 next weekend! Dixie didn’t even come close to getting tired… running with her really does help me run farther and faster. It makes me so happy to see her running, she loves it so much! We did 9 miles @ 8:47 pace. My only goal was to run at a comfortable pace under 9:00. I feel like I could have gone faster, but I have to remind myself that long runs are about distance and not about speed.

And this is what we will be doing for the foreseeable future. Hope everyone had a great Saturday!! (Yes Dixie is a Steelers puppy. Thomas is not a fan, but he already knows all of our children will be, so we might as well start with Dixie)

    you and Dixie are a champ!! First question Karen had after reading this, can Dixie really keep up with her and the distance every time-that’s a lot of running! Obvi she doesn’t how much energy she has-proud of you for pushing yourself-Keep going you little rockstar!

    I think running farther each week is one of the most fun things about training!

    Your dog is so cute. I can’t wait until my puppy is old enough to run with me.

  3. That is so exciting that you keep hitting new distance records! What a great feeling! And I love that you can do your runs around a lake; that sounds perfect.
    That is awesome that your dad is such seasoned running/racer- congrats to him!
