Post-Vacation Depression and Good Mileage

I know I’ve been really bad about posting and reading other blogs this past week, but I’ve been trying my best to get caught up, so bear with me!

Well, vacation is officially over. And I’m officially depressed. Why does it come and go SO fast? I had an amaaaaaazing week in Nags Head, NC with my whole family (cousins, aunts, uncles, parents, brothers, etc etc). Here is a picture of most of the cousins… we were missing two:

And here is one of my immediate family:

The weather was perfect, our house was oceanfront and awesome, and I could have stayed forever. Some of you may have heard that there were three shark attacks off the coast of NC this week, which is really scary and unusual. These weren’t anywhere close to us and happened after we left, so I spent a lot of time in the ocean. We saw tons of dolphins and actually saw a WHALE really close to shore that was jumping out of the water. That was a first for me.

I always look forward to our family beach week for many reasons, one of which would be the fact that there is food galore. My whole family LOVES to eat. And drink. I think I gained about 5 pounds on this vacation. BUT, I also ran 27 miles last week, which is the most weekly mileage I have done in a very, very long time. For some reason I find it easy to wake up and run in the morning while I’m on vacation, but I couldn’t imagine doing such a thing while I’m at home. Maybe it’s because I know I don’t have to do anything but sit around and get tan for the rest of the day.

We got home Saturday afternoon, so I met up with my dad and the Kernersville Running Club for a 7 mile run on Sunday morning. It was HOT and felt terrible. I think I was still in my depressed vacation-is-over mode and was not feeling very motivated at all. The highs have been in the 90s here lately, so I’ve accepted the fact that every outdoor run is going to be uncomfortable no matter what time you go. We ended up finishing 7 miles at about 9:00/mi average pace, but my watch was a little off.

Now, let me fill you in on some not so great Dixie news. Dixie stayed at her usual kennel while we were on vacation, but she had an incident on the first day there. I got a call shortly after dropping her off and they told me she had been attacked by a bigger dog when she was entering the play area. They were extremely apologetic and said the other dog was taken out of the area immediately and isolated from the other dogs and that Dixie was going to be fine, but they were going to take her to the vet as a precaution. Well, a few hours later I got a call from the vet saying she had stitches in two places and a pretty bad bite mark on her neck. I was crying and having a fit and I hadn’t even left town yet. I didn’t want to risk upsetting her by going to see her and then leaving again, so I just kept telling myself she was going to be fine. Of course I was a crazy dog mom all week.. I called and checked on Dixie almost every day while I was gone and was so desperate to see her on Saturday when we got home. I was so upset to see her wounds… I have been spoiling her like crazy and giving her so much love. She seems totally fine, but I know she was probably terrified during her stay.

Of course Dixie can’t run for a while, so she’s been enjoying slow walks and lots of rest since we brought her home. She has barely been able to keep her eyes open since she got home Saturday… poor baby Sad smile

On another note, thanks to everyone who entered the Tiux Compression Socks giveaway. The winner will be announced today on Instagram. Hope everyone had a great week! I look forward to catching up on everyone… good luck to Hanna who is running Grandma’s Marathon this weekend!!!

Does anyone else gain 5 pounds on vacation or did I overdo it?

What is your favorite part about vacation?

Woweeeee! Look at that hot little bod! Don’t you worry one bit about those 5 lb, miss Maddie. They look great on you. Poor Dixie… awe. I’m sorry to hear that. But ya, accidents happen and you’re right–she will be fine. Those will heal up fast and she’ll be back at it in no time. I bet she was still able to have fun and socialize with the other dogs.

    • Maddie says:

Oh, you’re too sweet. That picture was taken after eating a bacon cheeseburger and fries from Five Guys…. I should really start thinking about taking pictures on the first day of vacation instead of the last!

  2. Thank you for the well wishes!!

I’m soooo sorry about Dixie! Oh how awful!! I’m glad you didn’t let it ruin your vacation. You probably made the right call by not seeing her and leaving her again, although I know that must have been so hard. I’m glad she’s okay!!

Post-vacay depression is a very real thing! I feel ya girl. I’m sure I will be having it myself after our week long cruise in August. We are glad to have you back though!

    • Maddie says:

It definitely added a little bit of anxiety, but it was nice to be able to call and check on her whenever I wanted!

  3. Cheryl says:

So sorry about Dixie. I would have freaked out too, glad everyone made it through OK.
It looks like a fun vacation. I make sure I don’t weigh myself before and after…some things are better left unknown!
    Glad you are back!

    • Maddie says:

I really contemplated getting on that scale but I figured it would be a little extra motivation for running this week 🙂

  4. Kerry says:

Oh no! I hope Dixie heals soon. She looks so sad and tired in the pics. 🙁

I’ve definitely gained weight on vacations… I don’t usually worry about it, since I usually get back to my normal weight pretty quick once I get home. Sounds like you had a great week!

    • Maddie says:

Yeah, I already feel so much better after being home just one day. My body does sort of a natural detox and bounces back in a few days!

  5. That is so scary/sad to hear about Dixie!! Glad that she is doing okay now!

I always gain weight on vacations. On my honeymoon, we went to an all inclusive and I swear I gained 10 lbs. It is worth it though 🙂

    • Maddie says:

I know we will do the same on our honeymoon in September!! We made sure we picked a resort with awesome food reviews, so we will be ready to eat!!

  6. I have that same bikini top!! (the red one) haha great minds 😉

I’m so sorry about Dixie! Other dogs make me so nervous. Jeff and I were walking Rudy yesterday (he was on his leash) and this guy passed us with his dog (off leash) and the dog started growling and trying to get at Rudy. And the guy just kept running and was completely unaware! I’m so sorry that happened right before your trip! I’m glad to hear she’s doing well and will make a swift recovery!

    • Maddie says:

Ha, it’s a great top for minimal tan lines!!

I have the same issue with dogs that aren’t on leashes.. Dixie is pretty scared in general, and there are tons of dogs that get out in our neighborhood all the time that make me so nervous.

  7. Jamie says:

I’m so sorry about the pup! I would have lost it and probably ended up sneaking the dog on vacation with me! Haha. I’m glad she’s doing okay, and I’m sending her lots of positive vibes for a fast, healthy recovery! I absolutely gain weight on vacation. It’s all about enjoying yourself, eating and drinking, and not worrying about exercise. Although you totally killed it on that front! Best part of vacation is not having to get anything done by a certain time. I love the freedom that comes with a week of vacation!

    • Maddie says:

I really really wanted to just pick her up and bring her, but our beach house didn’t allow pets 🙁 I agree with you.. I love the freedom and not having a schedule to follow!

  8. Glad you had a good trip, but sorry to hear about Dixie. I always indulge a little more on vacation, but Im sure all the running balanced things out! Coming back from vacation is the worst….

  9. Dixie baby! I’m glad that she was ok, but that is terrible! Seems that they took all the necessary precautions though, thank goodness for that. Sh*t happens, as it were.
What an amazing vacation. OBX seems to be where it is at, huh? There are so few times that we get to have everyone around us, we gotta soak that ish up. Awesome mileage, and yes to all the eating. It ain’t vacation otherwise!

  10. Salt says:

Awwww poor Dixie!!! I hope she heals up quickly. <3
Overindulgence was my middle name the last time I was on vacation haha. It took me like 2 weeks to recover from it! It looks like you had such a fantastic time!

  11. Ariana says:

Aww, poor Dixie! I would be distraught if I got a call that this happened to one of my dogs. Hopefully she’s feeling better soon. Also, I am pretty familiar with Kernersville, I lived in Greensboro for almost two years and my office was out in Kernersville 🙂

    • Maddie says:

That’s awesome! It’s not too often you hear of people who are familiar with Kernersville 🙂 I grew up there but my fiance and I are living closer to the Winston-Salem area now.

  12. Poor little Dixie! At least the doggie vacation home was so thorough in taking care of her after the incident. She’s got the best doggie mommy with how much TLC you’re giving her!
Sounds like you had such a great vacation. I think it’s so good for the mind and body to relax and indulge when away. I’m also super jealous that you got to see dolphins and a whale!

  13. Michelle says:

Girl, if you gained 5 lbs and look THAT good I wouldn’t worry too much!!! You just stopped me from getting an afternoon snack! HEHEHE!!! Sending lots of love and prayers for Dixie! Poor pup!!!!

  14. I am SO sorry about Dixie!!! I’m glad the kennel and vet handled it well, but that’s terrifying. If she had been a smaller dog, the ending may not have been so happy. I hope she heals up quickly and the other dog isn’t invited back to that kennel.

I find it easier to run on vacation too. Maybe it’s because I tell people I’m going to run, so I feel like they’re holding me accountable haha!

  15. Girl, you are rocking that bikini!!!
Poor Dixie!!! I’m glad she’s on the mend <3

  16. Poor Dixie!! 🙁
I always put on some vacation pounds, but it comes off after a few days at home.
    Love you swimsuit!!

  17. Poor Dixie!!! Sweet little thing was probably so scared without her mom. I completely understand why you didn’t go back to check on her – it probably would have been impossible for you to leave her after that. Glad to hear she is on the mend and back at home.

Reading this got me excited for a vacation I am taking up to Seattle over the 4th of July. It’s a big family get-together and we’ll be staying at my mother-in-law’s house on Camano Island, which is right on the beach. There is always lots of food!! I usually gain around 5 pounds when on vacation, but I think a lot of it is fluid and the body being “thrown off”. It usually goes away in no time. Completely normal. 🙂

  18. Oh no! Poor Dixie!! So sorry that happened!
Also, I don’t know how to NOT gain weight on vacation…but it’s vacation, so I rarely feel bad about it. Haha.

  19. The Sharks are wayyy to close to me for my liking! It’s so crazy, I was just in the ocean yesterday and heard of the shark attacks when I got home. Luckily I only saw Jellyfish which is still unusual for this time of year. I’m so so sorry to hear about Dixie I can’t even imagine how you felt. Poor girl, I’m glad she is going to be okay though!

    • Maddie says:

Oh yeah oak island is super close to you!! Be careful and stay out of the water!! I would not be messing around with that…

  20. Oh my goodness, poor Dixie! Those are some serious bites/stitches. Looks like you had a fabulous vacation!

  21. Allison says:

Poor Dixie! OMG! Awwww! LOL – you only gained 5lbs?! Consider that winning 🙂 I pack them on during vacay!!

  22. Oh no! Poor Dixie! I can only imagine how stressful it must have been to not be able to go check on her and to have to call in each day. I am sure she is so relieved and happy to be home with you, and it looks like she’s really enjoying all that extra attention!

Can I just say that your hair is always perfect?!!!! Do you have naturally wavy hair? It’s gorgeous and I’m a million percent jealous of it!

    • Maddie says:

It was tough for sure! Thanks so much for the compliment!! It is naturally pretty curly and I used to hate it and straighten it but I’ve learned to just embrace it and let it do what it wants, especially at the beach!

  23. karen says:

Awww, poor Dixie 🙁 That is so upsetting. Poor you, that would be tearing my heart up, I have had my animals injured a few times and it kills the heart. I know you will take great care of her and spoil her, and i hope she feels better soon.
You had a great week running, it was a hot one for sure. Even at 5:30 in the morning i have been struggling, the humidity seems to linger 94 to 100% I am trying, but it hard. I am miserable by mile two 🙁 I keep hoping for a little cooler spell soon!
I saw the attacks on the news and yes, it is very scary.
I hate the reality check after vacation. Always take a few days to get over.

  24. Poor Dixie! I feel so bad for her, and I’m sure it was very tough on you as well!

Yeah, I definitely have a hard time eating healthy on vacation. I just really like food! 😉

My favorite part of a vacation is just being able to unwind and unplug!

  25. Hannah says:

Poor Dixie! That’s just awful. I hope you were still able to enjoy your vacation.

I seem to have better workouts at the beach too! :-). I love seeing other people out running in the mornings!
