Sucking it Up – Track Tuesday

I’ve made the decision that the heat is here to stay, so instead of complaining about it every day, I’m just going to suck it up and cope with it. I saw an instagram post yesterday afternoon with this caption:

“91 degree heat, 59% humidity, 8 miles… non stop. I run under impossible conditions to achieve impossible goals”

I thought that was a pretty good perspective. I prepared myself for a sweaty run with my favorite pre-run beverage: Nuun tablets.

5

I mix one in my water before my run and I swear it makes a huge difference. I used to drink gatorade before runs but it would always make my stomach hurt. Nuun tabs have less calories/sugar and just taste “lighter” so I feel like I’m still drinking water instead of a sugary sports drink. I looooove the tropical flavor.

I waited until about 7:00 and then headed out to the track for TRACK TUESDAY of course. My workout goal was 8 x 400s with 400m recovery laps in between. I wanted to do the 400s around 1:50 (7:20/mile pace) and my recovery laps around 2:15 (9:00 pace).

I did a half mile warm up and ended up doing 6 x 400s  instead of 8 and took a quick water break after #4.

Here are my splits (with recovery laps):

1

2

3

So the end result was 4 total miles. The 400s + recovery laps were around 8:00/mi overall pace. I finished right at 24:00 for 3 miles. I didn’t pace my warm up and cool down, but I think they were around 8:45 pace. When I got home a tried a new yoga video to stretch out my legs. I really liked this one. I’m not a fan of her unitard, but the video is pretty good.

Not only was it track Tuesday, but it was also TACO TUESDAY. We didn’t have tacos, but we did have salsa chicken enchiladas, which totally still counts. There’s nothing better than eating off of a paper plate at 9:00 pm in your recliner. We are getting pretty used to these 9 pm dinners…

4

Have a great Wednesday!!

Ever tried Nuun tablets? Favorite flavor?

Do you drink any kind of sports drink before your (non race) runs?

A Surprisingly Fast 6 Miles and Two Serious Questions

Nature has really been nice to me on my past few runs. There have been a lot of afternoon storms lately that cool everything down just in time for my run. As I was leaving work on Monday it was pouring down rain. I change into my running clothes at work and drive to a nearby area where I like to run because there really aren’t a lot of good places to run where I live (out in the country/middle of nowhere). I like running on sidewalks/greenways and we just don’t have lot of them out in Mocksville. Anyway, during the drive to my “spot,” the rain magically stopped right as I was pulling into the parking lot. The temperature had cooled down about 10 degrees and I was ready to go. I don’t really mind the humidity if the temperature is bearable.

My goal for this run was 6 miles. I didn’t really have a pace goal, but I wanted to start the week off with some decent mileage. Well, I ran the fastest 6 miles I’ve run since my 10k PR in March. 49:47 (8:17/mi).

2

My splits were 8:17, 8:19, 8:33, 8:15, 8:22, 7:59 – I haven’t run a sub 8:00 split on any run over 3 miles in a LONG time. I’m glad that I’m finally seeing my overall pace improve. Maybe it’s the yoga!? Or the extra strength training I’ve been doing during my downtime before training. Either way, I’m not going to stop doing either one of them. I’ve been feeling stronger on my runs and a lot more loose and flexible.

I’m really thankful for that rain storm not only because it cooled things down, but also because I could go to the grocery store after my run and maybe people thought I got stuck running in the rain and that I was not in fact covered in sweat from head to toe. My hair was soaked. That’s what humidity does to me.

Once I finally got dinner on the table it was 8:30 pm and I hadn’t even sat down yet. I hadn’t cuddled with Dixie since before I left for work that morning, so I decided to just relax with her for a little while and watch Real Housewives. She must have already seen that episode…

3

Hope everyone else had a great Monday. I have two very serious questions for you guys today. The first one is for everyone because I feel like there are mixed opinions on this subject:

Would you rather run in 70-80 degrees with 90% humidity or 90 degrees with zero humidity?

Second question is for all you mamas out there: HOW DO YOU DO IT? Seriously…. how do you work, run, chase kids around, feed people, feed yourself and still find time to blog and have some sort of social life? I don’t plan on having kids for a while, but I’m really intrigued. I can barely take care of Thomas and Dixie and they are pretty low maintenance. You are all superheroes.

2 MONTH Wedding Countdown & a Lake Weekend

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! Why do long weekends go by so fast? Actually time in general is just going by too fast because I’m getting married TWO MONTHS from today. I have a lot to do.

We spent the weekend at Lake James with Thomas’s family, and even though it rained a lot of the time we still had a fun weekend. We both had Friday off work so we left in the morning to head up to the lake. We spent the day out on the boat and floating around. My arms are STILL sore from wakeboarding. I seriously need to work on my upper body strength.

FullSizeRender

On Saturday, my soon to be sister in law and I decided to go for a run in the morning since it was pretty cloudy. I’m trying to talk her into signing up for the 8k or half marathon in Richmond. We did 3.5 miles at about 9:00 pace and then I did another mile at 7:50 pace.

We spent the rest of the day relaxing on the water and stuffing our faces with BBQ. After dinner we took the boat out again to watch fireworks and then made smores. Any day that ends with smores is a good day. Dixie stayed with my parents this weekend because we already had three dogs and too many people with us, but Buster got some good swim/fetch time in.

Hope everyone else had a fun weekend! Running was okay last week… I’m getting ready to start “officially training” in a few days, but I just realized that my first week of training is the week of my bachelorette party (next weekend), and we all know I’m not going to be doing a long run while I party it up in Savannah.  I’m going to try to get a few good long runs in this week to make up for it. Here is last week’s recap:

6/29 – 7/5
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 5 miles (1 mile warm up, 3 x 1 mile repeats 7:26, 7:29, 7:39, 1 mile cool down)
Wednesday: 4.2 miles @ 8:29/mi, 30 min yoga
Thursday: 3 miles @ 8:39/mi
Friday: 30 min yoga
Saturday: 4.5 miles @ 8:45/mi
Total: 16.7 miles

What did you do for the 4th of July?

Running in the Hood and I Did Something CRAZY

On Wednesday I got really lucky again and a storm came through right when I was getting off work, cooling things down to about 75 degrees. It was still lingering around when I was ready for my workout so I decided to stay close to home and do my run in my neighborhood. I kind of hate running in my neighborhood. People just leave their dogs running around so we always get chased, there are too many distractions for Dixie, and some people are just straight up disrespectful. I don’t know if yelling at a girl to “call you” while she’s trying to do a workout has ever resulted in an actual phone call, but I’m going to go ahead and say that DOESN’T work. Just to clarify – most of my neighbors are very nice families with sweet little children that keep their dogs in their fences. Unfortunately it only takes one or two houses to ruin a whole neighborhood.

We have two dogs this week (meet Buster, if you haven’t already), so I had to take them for alternating laps.

FullSizeRender (100)

Dixie ran a warm up lap (.8 miles) and then I took Buster for a lap. After I did my warm up with the dogs I decided to run 1:00 hard (7:45-8:15 pace) and then 2:00 at recovery pace (8:45-9:00 pace). This was a good workout to do in my neighborhood because I focused on my watch and my pace instead of the fact that I passed my house 5 times.

FullSizeRender (99)

After my run, I did something that I NEVER do. Something wild and crazy. I DID YOGA. For 20 full minutes. I’ve been reading all about how great yoga is for running from all of you, so I finally decided to just try it. It was a Runner’s Yoga video that I found on Youtube and I must admit, it wasn’t even that bad. I was able to stretch muscles that I didn’t even know I could stretch and I felt really good afterwards. I want to try to do a 20-30 minute yoga workout at LEAST once a week during my marathon training to help keep me loose and prevent injuries.

All you yogis —– Any online yoga videos that you love or DVD suggestions?

Do you run in your neighborhood/close to home or do you drive somewhere else?

EXCITING NEWS and Track Tuesday

First things first, a HUGEEEEE congrats to the U.S. Women’s National Team on beating Germany 2-0 last night!! They are on their way to the World Cup final Sunday where they will play either England or Japan. Watching these games makes me miss soccer soooooo much.

Work was just not going my way yesterday and I was ready to go home way too early in the day. I decided to run out my frustrations at the track after I got home. I was really happy a storm blew through right before I got home that cooled things off to about 80 degrees. One thing I love about this heat wave…. I get this place all to myself.

FullSizeRender (93)

Tuesday’s workout was 3 x 1 mile repeats, which went surprisingly well. I can’t remember the last time I did speed work or ran faster than 8:00 pace. My goal for these repeats was to keep them around 7:30-7:45 with a 400m recovery lap in between each mile.

The result was 5 total miles (I turned my watch off for the recovery laps) 8:58 warm up, 7:26, 7:29, 7:39, 8:52 cool down.

FullSizeRender (94)

FullSizeRender (95)

During mile 2 the sun was back out in full force and the temperature crept back up to 87. I don’t know why I torture myself by looking at the temperature, but I just like to know. I felt like I sweat out 5 pounds during this workout. It felt SO good. I promise my shirt was light gray when I started…

FullSizeRender (97)

I really tried to focus hard on my pace during this workout. I probably could have gone faster on the first one, but I knew I would suffer through the other two if I went too fast.  That’s a big lesson I learned during the transition from being sprinter to a distance runner. Not every workout has to be an all out effort to be effective.

Now, let me share my EXCITING NEWS with you guys. I am officially registered for the Richmond Marathon!!!!! I have been planning on doing this race for a while now, but now that they have my $95 it feels a lot more real. Training starts in less than 2 weeks!

Do you obsess over the temperature before/during a run like I do?

Were you ever a sprinter? What was your best event? (My events were 200m, 400m, 300m hurdles)

Bridal Shower and Weekend Recap!

Once again I am writing my weekend recap a day late because once again Monday was the devil this week and I was too overwhelmed and needed to gather my thoughts. This weekend was not a great running weekend, but it was so amazing in a million other ways.

On Friday my cousin Ali, my Aunt Kathy and Aunt Debbie all drove down from Pittsburgh. We had some drinks, walked around downtown and then had some dinner later that night.

11659503_10205139749881587_8091812903835596241_n

Late Saturday night, two more of my Pittsburgh friends, Nicole and Clontz, made it to my house around midnight and I woke up to greet them and then went right back to sleep because I was exhausted.

Saturday was my bridal shower – my first wedding event! I was soooo excited. I woke up early and took Dixie for 3 mile run (8:40 pace). Then we shared water because it was hot and her needs come first.

IMG_0193

After my run we ate pancakes and got all caught up on each other lives before heading over to Kernersville where the shower was being held. I was so nervous/excited so naturally I had to stop by my favorite wine shop for pre-bridal shower wine slushies with my cousins and sister-in-law.

FullSizeRender (87)

I had the BEST. DAY. EVER. Seriously, I just kept thinking about how blessed I am to be surrounded my so many amazing women.

IMG_0227

I felt so loved on Saturday and I surprisingly only cried ONCE when I saw one of my best friends from high school who is now 4 months pregnant. I hadn’t seen her since before she got pregnant so I just lost it when I saw her precious little belly.

I got a lot of great gifts, but honestly what meant the most to me was just having everyone there together to celebrate. My aunts and cousins put so much thought into this shower and every little detail was just perfect.

They had everyone write a word of advice on a shell and then made this little plate that looks so adorable in my house.

11350503_10204855432411049_3887818476451679138_n

They also played a game where I had to try to guess Thomas’s answers to a lot of questions about me/our relationship and we surprisingly did very well! Except apparently he thinks I like Kim Kardashian way more than I really do.

After the bridal shower, my next door neighbor threw a cocktail party for me and made me some delicious (dangerous) Grey Goose martinis. There was a lot of drinking going on this day, which might explain why I haven’t run since.

11009204_10205139757721783_413133602950543408_n

The party didn’t stop there… we went out to our favorite bar later that night to finish up the celebrations.

Now that I’ve filled you in all the fun things that happened this weekend, lets talk a little bit about how much I ran last week.

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 4 mi @ 8:25/mi
Wednesday: 5 mi @ 8:30/mi
Thursday: 3 mi @ 8:25/mi
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 3 mi @ 8:40
Sunday: Rest
Total: 15 miles

Definitely not enough, but I’m really looking forward to my first week of official training that starts on July 13. I’m going to have to force myself to do a lot of running on weekends like this one that is filled with wedding festivities because there will be a lot of them over th next few months.

Anyone have weddings/bridal showers to attend this summer?

Treats from the Suz and I’m really hot

HAPPY FRIDAY! I feel like this week has been sooooo slow. Probably because I’m super excited about seeing all my friends/family at my bridal shower tomorrow! This is my first “wedding event” and I can’t wait to see everyone 🙂

Last night I came home to this wonderful box of goodies on my front steps from Susie. I won these delicious treats in a giveaway she did a few weeks ago. Her blog is awesome (and so is she), but you guys probably already know that. Of course I had to sample a bite of pretty much everything as soon as I opened it. Some of the chocolate bars didn’t survive the heat, but they are in my refrigerator recovering as we speak and that won’t stop me from eating them.

IMG_0188I refused to run on the treadmill for the 3rd night in a row and Dixie was carrying around my running shoes so I decided to give outdoor running a try. I waited until about 7:30 when it was a cool 93 degrees and did a couple laps through the neighborhood. Dixie did the first mile with me (8:15 pace… she really missed running) and then I put her back inside because it was just too hot and I was afraid people might think I’m a bad dog mom. I did another two miles at 8:30 pace and called it a night.

I must say the aftermath was probably worse than the actual run. I was sweating for hours. You might think I’m being dramatic but for some reason it takes my body sooooo long to cool down after running in the heat. At 9 pm I was standing in the freezer with ice packs on my neck so I wouldn’t have to take another shower. Anyone else ready for fall!?

Random little piece of info here…. a few weeks ago I did a review of Tiux compression socks. Well, they are awesome and only $35 and you can get 10% with this link. So, go get em 🙂

One more thing… I read this article yesterday from Runner’s World. If you have 20 minutes, it’s a MUST READ. These inmates organize and run races in their yard and their stories are just incredible.

Capture

Hope everyone has a faaaaaaabulous weekend!!!

Have you tried any of the treats I got from Susie? Thoughts? I’m excited to try the Picky Bars!

Does it take you a while to stop sweating after a hot run?

Dixie Update and her PAWPACK!

A lot of you know that Dixie had an incident during her kennel stay a few weeks ago and had to have some stitches for a few bite wounds from another dog. Her wounds have almost completely healed, and pretty soon she will be able to run with her mom again!

Dixie is pretty much back to her normal self – happy and VERY energetic. On Tuesday she received a very special delivery…. her very first PAWPACK! She took the box right out of my hands and instantly tried to open it. This dog’s sense of smell is something else.

FullSizeRender (79)

Pawpack is a subscription service for your dog or cat that delivers healthy, all natural goodies to your front door once a month. Dixie has food allergies, so I was so excited to find a service that offered a 100% allergy guarantee and provides only grain-free, all natural treats! Even if your pet doesn’t have allergies that you know of, they will love the treats included in the Pawpack. Dixie went absolutely crazy for everything in this month’s box.

FullSizeRender (80)

In the Pawpack there were TWO squeaky toys – an ice cream cone and an octopus water toy, Moo Moo’s Chicken Jerky, Bear Crunch natural grain-free treats, a Whimzees alligator dog chew, and Sojos dog food. Dixie is a VERY satisfied customer. She wouldn’t stop barking at me because she didn’t understand why I was taking pictures of her instead of letting her dig in…

FullSizeRender (81)One of the toys was a super cute squeaky octopus that was actually a floating water fetch toy, which would be great for a dog that actually liked swimming, but was equally enjoyable for my princess. She demolished the octopus and squeaky ice cream cone, but that is nothing new. Dixie believes squeakers are evil and must be surgically removed INSTANTLY. That is her way of playing so we just let her do it. Sometimes I gather the stuffing and push it back inside the toy just so she can de-fluff it again.

FullSizeRender (82)
I’m really excited to make the Sojos dog food and see how Dixie likes it. It is a packet of dry mix of freeze-dried meat and veggies with no GMO’s, fillers, preservatives or artificial colors. You simply mix with water and it turns into a gourmet meal for your pup. We’re saving it for a special occasion. I’m glad someone is this house is eating healthy.

If you’re interested in Pawpack, check out their website for more information. They have Pawpacks for all you cat lovers out there too!!

Now that you are all up to date on Dixie’s life, I suppose I can let you know what I’ve been up to. It’s still 500 degrees here, so I’ve been on the treadmill this week. I did 4 miles Tuesday @ 8:25/mi and 5 miles Wednesday at 8:30/mi pace while watching Orange is the New Black. I’m really really sad that I’m almost done with season 3 and will have to wait another year for more episodes, but I’m trying to enjoy it while it lasts!

Also, I had to share this Aldi find with you guys. I think this whole thing of Gelato was $2.99 and I really enjoy walking around my house in my slippers while I eat it straight out of the container. Have a great Thursday!!

FullSizeRender (83)

Do you use any monthly subscription services? (Dollar shave club for Thomas & Stitch Fix for me – love them both!)

Any Orange is the New Black Fans?? How far along are you with Season 3? NO SPOILERS PLEASE 🙂

Weekend Recap (a little late) & Wireless Headphones

Yesterday I didn’t want to accept the fact that it was actually Monday so I’m writing my weekend recap post on Tuesday….

Friday night I did 4 mi on the treadmill @ 8:40 pace. I usually don’t run on Fridays, but we didn’t have any plans so we just decided to spend our Friday night at the gym. For dinner I made spinach artichoke ravioli (recipe from The Cooking Jar).

IMG_0126

On Saturday morning I refused to run on the treadmill, so I woke up way too early and headed to the lake for a run. I forgot my headphones and was running by myself, so I knew it was not going to be fun. Thankfully after about 2.5 miles I ran into my dad and Kara (another way faster than me running friend) and finished up with them. I ended up with a slow 7 miles @ 9:07 pace. I felt like I was running wayyyyy faster, but I guess that’s what the heat does to you.

FullSizeRender (75)

On Saturday we went to visit with Thomas’s parents since we weren’t going to be able to see them on Father’s Day and went to his dad’s jewelry store to pick out Thomas’s wedding band. Saturday night we met up with Sarah, Stephanie and her husband Scott for dinner.

FullSizeRender (76)

…and then Sarah, Thomas and I decided to go out for the night to meet up with some other friends.

IMG_0140

On Sunday we went over to my parent’s house to see my dad for Father’s Day. My brothers and I got him some Jaybird Bluebud X Wireless headphones for running. I’m interested to see how he likes them because I’ve been wanting a pair myself, but I’m soooo particular about how my running headphones fit my ears and I’ve only ever been able to keep Skull Candy headphones in my ears while I run.

Monday night was a rest day. We met up with Dara and Matt, our good friends who were with us the night we got engaged. We actually went back to the same restaurant where it all happened!

Unreal Heat and Wedding Planning Festivities

Thanks so much for all of your awesome advice and comments on my last post! It makes it a lot easier to think about taking on a marathon when I have all of you to consult on a daily basis. I know every runner is different, but it is beyond helpful to hear all of the different perspectives and experiences. So thanks for being awesome 🙂

It has been HOT here in NC. Like, REALLY, REALLY HOT. It has been in the high 90’s every day this week, so I’ve been spending my time on the treadmill.

Tuesday I did an easy 6 miles @ 9:10 pace and Thursday I did 4 miles @ 9:00 pace. I loooove this pace. I know it’s slow but I don’t breathe hard and nothing hurts and I can just watch Orange is the New Black in peace without huffing and puffing. Once training starts I’ll start throwing in some tempo runs, but 8:40-9:20 is my jam right now.

Thursday was an off day because we had our food tasting for our wedding after work. This might be my favorite part of wedding planning so far. I didn’t take pictures of everything, but it was all amazing and delicious. We had free beer, sampled hors d’oeuvres, bread, salad, a vegetarian dish and two main dishes. They gave us really small portions so we wouldn’t explode. I honestly would have eaten every bite so I’m really glad they forced us to eat smaller plates. It was all SO good and we were very very full when we left.

FullSizeRender (74)

Now I’m really looking forward to cake tasting! It’s hard to believe how fast time has flown by since we got engaged last September. I hate how fast time is moving but at the same time I can’t wait until our wedding day (79 days!!!!). I really am a lucky girl to be marrying my best friend.

jodigrayphoto (74 of 76) (426x640)

Sorry for the mushy-ness, I’m just suuuuuper excited.

Good luck to Hanna, Michelle, Allison, and Charissa who are all running Grandma’s marathon tomorrow!! I’ve loved reading your blogs and can’t wait to see how you guys do!

If you’re married, what was your favorite part of wedding planning?

What are you wedding cake flavor preferences!?
